During a midterm election only about 40% of eligible voters turn out to vote. Other first world countries see voting rates at 70% or more! Because voting is so important to our democracy many businesses are helping Get Out the Vote
by offering deals for customers on Election Day! It could be a small fry or a taste of ice cream, businesses across Colorado wish to show the importance of voting. (Per election law
, you may not provide any incentive to one class of people. ie, to those who show they voted. You must offer it to ALL your customers.) If you would like to know more about what is happening and join in go to facebook.com/GOTVbusinesschallenge
. ELECTION DAY LAWS YOU SHOULD KNOW On Election Day, employees of legal voting age are entitled to two hours of leave in order to vote and their employer cannot dock their pay or discharge the employee for taking time off to vote. This only applies to employees who do not have 3 hours off of work while the polls are open on Election Day. Additionally, employees who wish to take time off to vote on Election Day must request the time off at least one day before, and the employer may determine what time the employee can take off in order to vote. (The hours shall be at the beginning or end of a work shift if the employee requests.) If you have any questions about what businesses must do to comply with the law on Election Day, please contact Nick Hoover at 303-830-2972.
